2008-06-04 Capitol Hill Watch Lawmakers Seek To Revive Legislation That Would Eliminate COBRA Coverage Limits

Reports. COBRA currently allows U. S. residents who have left a job to keep their group insurance from their former employers for up to 18 months, and in some cases up to 36 months, by paying the entire premium. The Health Insurance for Life Act would remove those limits.

The bill has not come up for a vote in either chamber, but if it is approved, COBRA coverage would cost U. S. residents up to 106 pct. of the former insurance premium rather than 102 pct. , Kirk said. He added that although not everyone can afford COBRA, for people who can, "at least . you can choose to remain insured" (Thomas,

2008-05-30 Countys employees reluctant to retire

The early retirement package added four bonus years to the pension plan, granted health insurance for life at 50 percent of the cost and also allowed people to keep the money from the 401a direct contribution plan.

Tommy Hulsey is a fire engine driver who meets the rule of 75 this year, but doesn and rsquo;t want to retire. "I and rsquo;d love to stay on. I and rsquo;ve been here 23 years, and I cannot remember a day that I ever dreaded coming to work," said Hulsey, who has lived in Gainesville his whole life. "The bad thing about it is I and rsquo;ve got nine more shifts, and I hate it when every day clicks by. It and rsquo;s been a wonderful job, and I and rsquo;d like to retire on my terms. "

2008-05-28 Federal News Radio - WFED: Theres Gold In Them Thar Retirement Communities.

According to GAO data, something like 165,000 former feds, many retirees, are now working for government contractors. The contractors love them because they have their own health insurance(for life) and many have top security clearances. While there are the usual revolving door and buddy-system concerns, many think it is worth it.

NTEUs legislative director said making it more attractive for retirees to return to government is a good idea. But she also pointed out that, unless it was used and monitored carefully, it could have an adverse impact on people who havent retired. Her concern is that the retirees, in effect, would be cheap (as in inexpensive) labor that could make them more desirable than serving career civil servants. The retirees already have health insurance and pensions. They would not accumulate any other benefits, which can be costly, while working. For more details, check out

2008-05-22 Federal News Radio - WFED: Test Your Age IQ: Henry Clay or Clay Aiken

The fact is that by the time theyve focused on retirement, many if not most federal workers realize they made a pretty wise choice staying in government. The indexed-to-inflation retirement system, the health-insurance-for-life option and the federal 401(k) plan are unmatched in the private sector. And we may have a solution to getting and keeping young folks in the fold.

2008-05-21 Federal News Radio - WFED: Big pay raise looming

I dont think theyre tackling the root cause of this, and that is, a number of presidents -- Reagan, Bush, Carter and Clinton -- all said that the federal pay system is flawed. That is, it only looks at pay matchups for selected jobs and it doesnt take into account the value of fringe benefits. As we all know, federal fringe benefits are like nothing in the private sector. (Federal employees have) annuities indexed for inflation, health insurance for life, a 401k plan -- which, for most people, will match up to 5 percent of the salary.

2008-05-17 LETTER: Onset Fire District needs better oversight

The people of the Onset Fire District spend approximately usd. 150,000 a year to pay the three Prudential Committee members and three water commissioners, plus they may be eligible for Plymouth County retirement and medical insurance for life.

If it is, then it is also inappropriate for the Prudential Committee to sign bills to maintain it. The clerk-treasurer of the district, being the only bonded person responsible for spending, should also stop all money being spent.

2008-04-19 The Oneida Daily Dispatch - What does a county supervisor do, anyway

I have been a supervisor 21 years. We have a responsibility to the town and the county. We are paid by the town and county. City of Oneida (supervisors) only get paid by county. They have less responsibility to the city but equal responsibility to the county. When you are on county business, you devote your time to the county. Town business - its all about the town. The county is represented by towns. Supervisors should bring what they learn from the county to the town they represent. We have the town meeting every month, I have a lot of communication with my town. Supervisors get paid insurance after 10 years and can also join the retirement plan. Maybe it should be changed so that supervisors should be with the county 20 years before they get lifetime benefits. "

2008-04-14 School lawyers enjoying outrageous benefits Democrat and Chronicle

And look at the goodies thrown at part-time board members at the Monroe County Water Authority if they serve a single five-year term. They also were given health insurance for life.

But its hardly surprising. In Greece, for instance, a former school superintendent was given lifetime health insurance.

Its outrageous that school districts in New York are allowing part-time lawyers access to full pension and health insurance benefits on the public dime.

Cuomos probe of part-timers included one lawyer who worked for seven school districts and BOCES in one year, and received usd. 700,000 in pension benefits.

2008-04-14 John McCains Enormous Hypocrisy on the War - News Bloggers

I love you, Capt. Negative. The 19 pct. lunatics. On a more serious matter, do any of you veterans realize McCain wants to do away with the health benefits of the VA He wants to put all their health care out there "on the open market. " Yeah, no veterans with any health care problems (most of them) would be able to get health insurance from the traditional companies. In fact, under McCains proposal, even he (with his skin cancer) would be unable to get health insurance. Glad he has served in the US Senate, so he had free medical care and insurance for life. Too bad the rest of you veterans wont get that (Lt. Curry) if he is elected.
